Why Your Shooting Stance Could Get You Killed

Why Your Shooting Stance Could Get You Killed

In a real fight, the threat’s view of you might be the last one that matters.
At A+R Tactics, we see it often—shooters step into a defensive stance that feels strong, but it leaves too much of their body exposed. That extra inch or two of visibility can mean everything in a fight for your life.

In this scenario training session, we helped one of our participants work through exactly that. As she practiced moving into position, we focused on three key fundamentals: limiting exposure, steadying for the shot, and using angles to your advantage.

The lesson? Confidence under pressure doesn’t come from luck. It comes from training.

What Overexposure Looks Like in Real Life

When you’re behind cover or inside a hallway, every inch counts. Too many people lean too far out from cover, expose a full shoulder, or step out square to the threat. To you, it might just feel like better vision—but to the bad guy, it’s an open target.

In this video, we show what that looks like from both perspectives: the shooter’s view, and the threat’s. Seeing it that way makes the mistake impossible to ignore.

Once you understand how the threat sees you, you start to respect cover differently. You learn to use the edge, keep your gun and eyes in the fight while the rest of your body stays protected.

Angles, Balance, and Real Pressure

Angles decide outcomes. Whether you’re defending your home or caught in public chaos, the right positioning limits what a threat can see—and what they can hit. We guide participants through how to adjust those angles in real time, using dynamic movement and body mechanics that keep them stable and fast.

It’s not about standing still and shooting tight groups. It’s about understanding how to move, post, and fire accurately under stress when things aren’t perfect—because they never are.

Training Together Builds Real Confidence

Much respect to this incredible couple who came in to train home defense together. Every rep, every scenario, they worked as a team—correcting, communicating, and growing through it. That’s what true preparation looks like.

They didn’t just walk away with better shooting mechanics. They walked away with confidence they can rely on when it matters most.
